Cristiano Ronaldo thinks it “didn’t make sense” to complete a transfer just to play in the FIFA Club World Cup as he sets his sights on a bigger goal.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star turned down a number of offers, including one from Al-Hilal, so that he could feature at the revamped tournament.
Speculation over a potential move ramped after Ronaldo posted on social media “the chapter is over” following Al-Nassr’s final league game of the season.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s contract with the Saudi Pro League outfit was due to expire this summer, but he will be staying put for at least another two years after penning a new deal.
Ronaldo has now revealed that he did “not listen” to proposals from other clubs so that he could be “ready not only for Al Nassr, but also for the national team” ahead of next summer’s FIFA Men’s World Cup.
“I had some offers to play (Club) World Cup, but I think it didn’t make sense because I prefer to have a good rest, a good preparation, because this season will be very long, because this is the season of the World Cup at the end,” he told Al Nassr TV.
Ronaldo will be 41 years of age when the World Cup takes place in the United States, Canada and Mexico in 2026.
The Portugal international will be looking to win the competition for the first time in his career and add to the three international titles he has won previously. He has scored 138 goals in 221 appearances for the country.
