Crystal Palace are in advanced talks over a deal to sign free agent Takehiro Tomiyasu, although final terms, including contract length, are still to be agreed.

The 27-year-old featured for Palace at the Como Cup, a pre-season tournament held from July 28 to July 31, after The Athletic reported he had been training with Pierre Sage’s side.

Palace staff have been impressed with the Japan international during their training camp.

Tomiyasu has been a free agent since leaving Ajax, where he made just nine appearances last season. He was nonetheless selected for Japan’s World Cup squad, playing in three of their four matches and starting twice.

Capable at right-back, left-back and centre-back, he spent four seasons at Arsenal after arriving from Bologna in 2021, making 84 appearances. Injuries disrupted his later campaigns, and he left in July 2025 by mutual agreement to terminate his contract a year early, before his season at Ajax.

Palace are seeking defensive reinforcements following Maxence Lacroix’s move to Chelsea and Nathaniel Clyne’s departure. The report added they are in advanced talks to sign American wing-back Zavier Gozo from Real Salt Lake.
