Leon Goretzka has written himself into the history books at FC Bayern – without even knowing it at first. The midfielder scored the goal that made it 2-0 in the 5-0 away win against FC St. Pauli, creating a historic moment in the Bundesliga

His goal was Munich’s 102nd goal of the season – breaking the legendary record from the 1971/72 season, when Bayern scored 101 goals. A record that had stood for over five decades and was now impressively surpassed by Vincent Kompany’s team. In the end, Bayern even took the new record to 105 goals

Goretzka has no idea about the record

Curious: Goretzka himself was unaware of the historic dimensions of his goal immediately after scoring. „To be honest, I wasn’t, but after the game, some people told me,“ explained the 31-year-old in an interview on Sky

He even had to let the moment sink in: „I also had to have it explained to me first, what record.“

Nevertheless, the international was delighted afterwards to be part of this special chapter – even with a wink

From own goal to record

Goretzka recalled a less glorious entry in the history books: „I think I’ve scored the fastest own goal in Bundesliga history so far,“ he said with a grin. In 2019, he had actually scored into his own net after just 13 seconds during the game in Augsburg

It’s all the nicer now to be associated with a positive record: „Of course, it’s nice to have another point to immortalize yourself in.“

Focus on Real Madrid

Despite all the records, FC Bayern have long since turned their attention back to the future. Goretzka was confident ahead of the second leg against Real Madrid, but also warned against too much euphoria: „We’re playing at home. We feel very, very comfortable there. Our opponents don’t usually feel so comfortable there.“

Nevertheless, he made it clear: „This is still a huge challenge.“

FC Bayern have established a strong starting position with their victory in the first leg – but Goretzka knows that they will need another top performance to reach the semi-finals.
