Leeds United are yet to make an addition to their squad this month, although there is still time in the transfer window for each club in the automatic race to become stronger and that will have a large part to play in what happens next.

It could shape the future of each club, with plenty still to be decided during the run-in. Leeds have already seen promotion rivals Sunderland and Sheffield United secure impressive signings already. Enzo Le Fee and Ben Brereton-Diaz have caught the eye respectively.

It highlights how fresh faces could give teams an extra edge, even if Leeds have a strong squad already. That's because numerous players from last season continue to be key pieces of the promotion puzzle, but plenty of the summer signings have also improved the team.

For that reason, Leeds may not feel the need to add in a plethora of players, but adding further would strengthen their hand even more in the race for automatic promotion

The verdict on Leeds United's January transfer business so far

We asked FLW’s Leeds United fan pundit Kris Smith for his thoughts on the transfer window so far, including his thoughts on the lack of business at Leeds and how disappointed or happy he is at this moment in January.

He said: "The fact that Leeds have done literally nothing in the market, so far in terms of incomings, is a real concern.

"With exactly a week left in terms of when the transfer window shuts, Farke — speaking more positively — has changed his tune on the fact that he wasn't too keen on signings when the January window first opened.

"But now, he is quite insistent on the three positions that he wants improvement — if those players become available.

"The fact that it has taken so long for this stance to change means that he has given himself a lot of work to do before the 3rd of February.

"Loaning out Joe Gelhardt to Ruben Selles' Hull City looks like it could be a masterstroke by the time May comes around.

"He's already started well and Hull are improving by the game. But the fact that this is the only business worth mentioning, from a Leeds perspective, is really alarming.

"In seven days' time we could all be looking back at the work Leeds have done and celebrating it and just how well they have done.

"But we are cutting it fine once again. And the last thing we need is the 'don't go to bed just yet' drama on deadline day."

Leeds need to avoid repeat of previous transfer windows

Of course, that infamous moment saw Jason Pearce go viral on deadline day when Matt Smith and Dom Poleon were sold in the last hours of the window with no one else arriving after the time of the tweet.

Now, Leeds are eyeing deals for players that they believe can make an impact after promotion as well, which makes securing deals difficult. For some players, Championship football is beneath them, hence they need to be more convinced with greater incentives in place ahead of a switch to the second tier.

The problem is that they cannot afford to be totally inactive in the market and will know the importance of getting the January transfer window right this time around, as it could be pivotal in shaping the second half of the campaign.
