Tomas Cvancara and Junior Adamu, could it work as a striking partnership?

With Martin O’Neill calling the shots at Celtic it may well be an option for the rest of this season as the legendary Celtic manager looks to secure a league and Scottish Cup double and see just how far he can take Celtic in the Europa League…

Two of Celtic’s January recruits Tomas Cvancara and Junior Adamu have made an instant impact, breaking their scoring duck early on, and impressing the supporters with their overall ability, and contributions to our offensive department.

Both players are not what you would describe as out and out strikers, but they have shown that they are capable of finding the back of the net if they are presented with the opportunity. Something we’ve been missing in recent months.

Martin O’Neill has already said that Tomas Cvancara reminds him of Chris Sutton playing for the club two decades ago while Premier Sports noted that Junior Adamu’s goal celebration, after scoring a dramatic equaliser for Celtic in the 97th minute of the Scottish Cup Fifth Round tie against Dundee on Saturday, was reminiscent of the way the King of Kings Henrik Larsson would celebrate his goals during his reign at Celtic.

This has led to a significant number of supporters suggesting that both players should be utilised as a partnership to fully bolster our firepower, especially with the title run in gathering momentum, and more crucially goal differential could well come into play to determine the outcome of the title.

To implement such a system would require two different methods. One being an old school 4-4-2 formation being deployed to accommodate such a partnership, meaning other areas would have to be tweaked to suit that philosophy.

Or option two could see one of the two, most likely Adamu could play out wide, as like Cvancara he possesses great versatility in the forward line. Although much like Sebastian Tounekti, the Austrian International might be seen as more of an impact player going forward.

Would Martin be willing to make changes with his side to accommodate both strikers  in his starting XI  or will he simply look to fit Adamu in over on the wing. I have my reservations about Celtic going with a striking partnership and with a new formation. The nightmare of the Wilfried Nancy 33 day stint as Celtic manager is still fresh in the memory of every Celtic supporter, so the last thing we need at this stage of the season is to have to adapt to yet another way of playing.

However it’s an idea that has its merits, I guess we will find out in the next run of fixtures what Martin O’Neill thinks about it. As he is our interim manager – then, until that changes he is only concerned with the here and now and that means winning football matches, as many as he possibly can before the end of May.

Both of the new strikers will clearly make his job a little easier as they both look like they’ll start hitting the back of the net on a regular basis, fingers crossed on that one folk!  Both are big physical presences and have a bit of pace about them, as well as being comfortable on the ball, so they could well form a decent partnership given the opportunity.

We need to find the right balance in our attacking outlet with some huge season defining fixtures on the horizon. Could a front two of Adamu and Cvancara be the tactical answer in certain matches, maybe the away tie in Stuttgart in the Europa League Play-off?

Meanwhile both Tomas Cvancara and Junior Adamu should get more minutes tomorrow night as Celtic take on bottom side Livingston in the Scottish Premiership at Celtic Park, with three points being absolutely essential.

The earlier we can get a few goals and put this one to bed the better.
