Daniel Farke has taken a cautious view on Sean Longstaff featuring for Leeds United at Newcastle United, stressing the midfielder needs training time after a six-week lay-off.

According to Leedsunited.news, Longstaff sustained a calf injury after the 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa, when Leeds had led before England international Morgan Rogers scored twice. The initial estimate was four to six weeks out, and six weeks later he returned to the squad for Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Manchester United after missing eight games, starting with Manchester City.

Farke said he included Longstaff at Old Trafford for his maturity and experience with Ethan Ampadu suspended. “For Sean Longstaff, it will be beneficial to have at least two training days. It’s tricky for him after being out for such a long time,” he said.

Longstaff had not yet trained, and Farke’s stance reflects that a midweek return would be difficult. The midfielder has missed the entire run in which Leeds were reshaped from half-time against Manchester City through to the Manchester United draw, a seven-match unbeaten stretch.

Earlier in the season he was a key figure, collecting man-of-the-match awards, including on his debut against Newcastle. He even joked he would “chin” referee Michael Oliver. With Ilia Gruev starting the last two and Ampadu back from suspension, Longstaff may have to wait for minutes once fully fit.
