Danilo and Alex Sandro clinched their 13th trophy together on Sunday as Flamengo beat Fluminense to win the Campeonato Carioca.
According to Globo.com, the defenders have been friends for more than 15 years. They first teamed up at Santos in 2010, then Porto in 2012 and Juventus for five seasons, before Alex Sandro moved to Flamengo in the second half of 2024. Danilo has said he is considering retiring at the end of this season, when he will be 35.
Five months after Alex Sandro’s arrival, Danilo left Europe to join Flamengo in February 2025, fulfilling their long-held wish to play together in Brazil. In Rio they have lifted two Cariocas, the 2025 Supercopa do Brasil, the 2025 Libertadores and the 2025 Campeonato Brasileiro. In this year’s state final, Alex Sandro started and Danilo stayed on the bench.
Their earlier honours include the 2011 Campeonato Paulista and 2011 Libertadores with Santos, and Portuguese league titles in 2011/12 and 2012/13 with Porto. With Juventus they won Serie A in 2019/2020, the 2020 Supercoppa Italiana and the Coppa Italia in 2020/21 and 2023/24.
The pair are also targeting the 2026 World Cup. They are on Carlo Ancelotti’s provisional list for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada mid-year. Both played for Brazil at the 2022 World Cup, while in 2018 only Danilo was selected.
