Leeds United have renewed links to Danilo Doekhi, with the Union Berlin centre-back ‘set to leave’ as a free agent this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Leeds explored the 27-year-old in January but no move followed. Doekhi has since played every Bundesliga minute this season and scored five goals while running down his contract.

Leeds are again named among suitors, although competition will be strong. Borussia Dortmund are believed to be keen and a number of clubs in Saudi Arabia are also interested.

Born in Rotterdam in 1998, Doekhi came through Excelsior and Ajax, featuring for Jong Ajax in the same period as Pascal Struijk. He left Ajax in 2018 for Vitesse, making 140 appearances and often captaining the side. He moved to Union Berlin in May 2022 and has played 134 games, scoring 16.

At 6ft 3ins, the right-footed defender fits recent Elland Road recruitment and can play on the right or in the middle of a back three. Leeds are well stocked there with Joe Rodon and Jaka Bijol, with James Justin and Sebastiaan Bornauw able to cover. The left side is lighter, with Struijk the only natural left-footer and entering his final 12 months, though Doekhi’s free-agent status could offer a low-cost option.
