Darren Fletcher is expected to take charge of Manchester United on an interim basis following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.

Man United have parted ways with the Portuguese after 14 months in charge, with his bombshell interview after the 1-1 draw against Leeds United yesterday proving to be the final straw.

There had been a breakdown in relations behind the scenes for a while between Amorim and the Red Devils’ leadership team.

His back-three system has drawn concerns for many months, and a return of three wins in their last 11 Premier League games was not convincing enough.

Fletcher’s first game will be at Burnley on Wednesday night, with a permanent appointment likely to wait until the summer.

The former Man United midfielder is the current Under-18s coach, and he will be desperate to prove his worth.

The Red Devils host Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup third round on Sunday before hosting Manchester City in the Premier League the following Saturday.

Amorim joined Man United from Sporting CP in November 2024 as Erik ten Hag’s replacement, but he struggled to hit the ground running.

The club finished 15th in the Premier League table at the end of the season and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

Disagreements with Man United director of football Jason Wilcox and head of recruitment Christopher Vivell over his style of play have proven costly in the end.

The club will now look to appoint a permanent manager who understands the club, and Fletcher has some games to prove himself.

The 41-year-old returned to Man United in October 2020 to coach their U16s before being promoted to a first-team coaching role in January 2021.

Fletcher became the technical director in March 2021 but was replaced by Wilcox in April 2024. He was appointed to oversee the U18s in July 2025.
