David Ferguson is set for a key role at Gateshead under Lee Cattermole, who is preparing for his first season in charge. The former Sunderland and Hartlepool United defender has settled well since switching to central defence.

According to Sunderland Echo, the Wearside-born defender joined the Heed last summer and endured mixed fortunes as a poor first half of the campaign was followed by a surge under Rob Elliot that secured a remarkable escape from relegation to National League North.

Usually a left-back, Ferguson shifted centrally during the run-in and steadied a nervy finale. The 32-year-old has continued there in pre-season, with a win at Northern League Division One side Blyth Town followed by draws at Heaton Stannington and National League North newcomers Hebburn Town.

Ferguson trained alongside Cattermole as a youngster at Sunderland and was an unused substitute in the 1-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur in May 2013. He later represented Blackpool, York City and Hartlepool.

After the Hebburn draw, Cattermole praised Ferguson’s fitness and character, and said the centre of a back three suits him. He added that regular minutes are sharpening his reading of the game.

The Gateshead boss believes Ferguson can extend a fine career in this new role and expects him to be a major figure for the Heed.
