Rennes boss speaks out on Jacquet move

We’ve not had official confirmation of Jérémy Jacquet’s move to Liverpool yet, but Rennes boss Habib Beye has described the transfer as “the best deal we could hope for”.

The defender is set to attract a £55m fee, with an extra £5m in add-ons, and will remain with Rennes for the rest of the 2025/26 season before heading to Anfield on a five-year deal in the summer.

Speaking in a pre-match press conference, Beye noted that Rennes “obtained the amount that the club looked for, we respected the player’s wish and we have him for the remainder of the season.

“It’s the reality of the market. The club he joins will offer him Champions League football and what is currently the best league in the world. We simply don’t have the means to fight.

The trend comes to a head…

Well done to the 50% of you who guessed £1.7bn.

Premier League clubs have splashed out just 13% of the £12.2bn spent on transfers since 2021 in the January transfer windows – just three percent more of the £10.5bn in expenditure during the summer windows alone.

Something which has 100% manifested itself in today’s largely uneventful deadline day.

It appears that top flight clubs in England are getting deals done early, and not rushing to rescue themselves.

Or they just ran out of money.

It’s gone awfully quiet, even by today’s standards, so let’s run you through some of the big deals we’re keeping an eye on.

Jérémy Jacquet is set to undergo his Liverpool medical today ahead of a £55m move from Rennes – though we’re expecting him to stay with the French club for the remainder of the season before arriving on a five-year deal in the summer.

Jean-Philippe Mateta is nearing a move to AC Milan, and we understand that he has travelled to Paris to complete a medical. If the Rossoneri opt to pull out of the deal, Juventus are reportedly ready to swoop in. Remember, if Mateta stays in London, that is likely to have a knock-on effect on Crystal Palace’s pursuit of Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Arsenal are looking to secure the services of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle after Mikel Merino sustained a foot injury that will keep him sidelined for a lengthy period of time – but the Magpies insist they are not willing to sell the Italian.

Newcastle are, however, expected to bid farewell to Jamaal Lascelles in a £7m move to Leicester, who are also hoping to complete the loan signing of Man City’s Divine Mukasa.

Sunderland are preparing to send Simon Adingra out on loan to Monaco, and look to replace the winger with Anderlecht’s Nilson Angulo.

By Rhys Webb

📝 14:39

Should Arsenal be seeking a replacement for Merino?

Mikel Merino having a surgery booked to address a bone injury in his right foot isn’t the best news for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal fans.

Aaron, a Gunners fan, said: “I feel like Arsenal should have signed someone on loan to replace [Mikel] Merino. We will miss his goals!!!”

Might it have been Tonali? Probably not. So how does Arsenal’s squad depth look in the versatile Spaniard’s positions using Mikel Arteta’s set up against Leeds last week?

The return of Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz will surely help mitigate the knock to their goal threat, as will Viktor Gyokores’ goal in giving him the confidence he needs to up his underwhelming tally in an Arsenal shirt.

Also recall the brief experiment in which Myles Lewis-Skelly was drafted into midfield, to act as a box-to-box midfielder – something that Merino is also more than capable of doing.

How do you think Arsenal will fare with him out injured?

Liverpool’s new goalkeeper problem?

At the core of it is just how much Alisson has left to offer, and the 33-year-old Brazilian hasn’t shown many signs of slowing down despite a recurring hamstring problem dating back to November 2023.

If the Georgian does depart, Liverpool’s back-up would then include former Preston man Freddie Woodman and 22-year-old Harvey Davies, who’s currently on loan at Crawley Town of League Two.

Leicester look set to sign Jamaal Lascelles from Newcastle in a deal worth £7m.

The defender has been on the watchlist of many Championship clubs throughout the January window, with his contract on Tyneside set to expire this summer.

The 32-year-old has made more than 250 appearances for the Magpies but playing time this season has been limited. His experience could prove crucial at the King Power Stadium, as the Foxes look to avoid slipping further into a relegation battle.
