Three months into his Manchester United tenure, Ruben Amorim could already be reuniting with one of his ex-protegees.

The Portuguese tactician has endured nothing short of a tumultuous time at Old Trafford since swapping the luxuries of Sporting Lisbon, where he’d enjoyed an unbeaten start to the campaign in the league and Europe, for Manchester.

Now, Amorim has sustained seven defeats in his opening 13 Premier League matches, as well as four wins and two draws. His side were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup after a seven-goal thriller in the quarter-finals vs Tottenham Hotspur, where the Reds lost 4-3.

He has been partly backed in the winter transfer window after INEOS pursued full-back Patrick Dorgu, formerly of Lecce, who officially signed over the weekend. However, fans are growing frustrated at the owners’ lack of action for other depleted positions.

For example, United have just signed off on the exits of Antony to Real Betis and Marcus Rashford to Aston Villa (both loan moves) – but have done so without even having a replacement lined up to bolster Amorim’s frontline.

It means he will be navigating the rest of the season with only four forwards: Alejandro Garnacho, Amad Diallo, Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund.

He’d have perhaps benefitted from United targeting a player he knows how to get the best out of, such as Marcus Edwards, 26, who’s just joined Burnley on loan from Sporting. Fabrizio Romano revealed that the ‘deal [is] now confirmed’, adding that a buy clause has been included in the terms.

Yet, the only way Amorim will now reunite with the winger is if United come head-to-head with the Clarets in the next rounds of the FA Cup – or if they’re promoted to the top flight again come the summer.
