Kuryu Matsuki struck in the 85th minute with a close-range finish to seal Southampton's 2-1 win at Coventry City. The midfielder's late goal capped an all-action display on both sides of the ball.
Early on, he fashioned the first big opening from a corner, nodding the ball back across for a close-range chance that went wide (9.). He later saw a left-footed effort from the centre blocked (40.).
After the restart, the Japan midfielder threatened again from distance (76.). Then he stole into the six-yard box to steer in James Bree's cross from close range (85.).
He finished with three attempts, five touches in the box and four tackles, plus eight possessions won and three clearances, numbers that underlined his work at both ends for Saints.
His timing on late runs and repeat recoveries kept Coventry on the back foot and helped the Saints control the decisive moments.
The Saints host Norwich next in the Championship. Coventry visit Swansea.
