Clinical edge lacking v First Vienna FC

First Vienna FC 2-0 FC Red Bull Salzburg Women (H/T:2-0). Goals: Pfanner (5'), Fankhauser (18')

Going 0-2 down after 18 minutes proved too much of a hurdle in our ADMIRAL Women's Bundesliga away game in Vienna-Döbling. The Vienna team underscored its ambitions, and our first failure to score this season also meant our first away defeat.

Match summary

Kerschbaumer unleashed a drive after 37 seconds, and this first attempt by the hosts set the tone for the opening 45 minutes. They should have done better just a few minutes later, when Höcherl ran onto a pass deep and found Pfanner, the better-positioned player, just outside the box. The Vienna attacker was relatively unmarked as she put her side in front (5').

Our team struggled, but then promptly suffered another setback: Fankhauser took a low corner and effortlessly fired the ball from the edge of the penalty area – over goalkeeper Michaela Fischer and Valentina Illinger – into Döbling's goal (18').

Undeterred, Pavlovic's team combined brilliantly forward. Only the leg of home defender Piplits stood in the way of a quick response. Greta Spinn moved into the danger zone from the right in our best opportunity! Kerschbaumer opened the first period and finished it off too as her flicked cross landed on the roof of the goal.

After the break, there wasn't much attacking action against the hosts' organised defence. Several shots from Vina Crnoja and team-mates went close, and Schneiderbauer also stopped a promising solo effort from Greta Spinn. Our comeback attempts were therefore nipped in the bud, and the 2-0 defeat in the capital – Fischer prevented Höcherl from scoring a third goal in the final moments – was complete.

We didn't get off to a good start and conceded two goals relatively quickly. Then we gradually got into the game, but ultimately, the defeat was deserved – Vienna were the better team today. In contrast to the past four weeks, we failed to bring our energy and game plan onto the pitch. We have to congratulate them. The game is a great learning experience for us – games like these are incredibly valuable if you analyse and assess them correctly.
