It was a pretty poor week for the Belgian Pro League in European competitions this week. All three of the clubs competing across two of the three competitions suffered defeats, once again highlighting how important it is coefficient wise to have at least one or two teams in the Conference League.
Union St Gilloise go down fighting against Marseille
Union St Gilloise took an early lead against Marseille in the Champions League but were unable to hold on. Anan Khalaili scored twice, with the first coming in the opening five minutes. However, goals from Igor Paixao and two from Mason Greenwood meant that Union suffered a 3-2 defeat to the Ligue 1 side. Union are just outside of the top 24 by a single point, but will need to win at least one of their remaining games against Bayern Munich or Atalanta, with the latter being more likely.
Club Brugge undone by ruthless Arsenal
Club Brugge wasted plenty of chances as the Ivan Leko era got underway in the Champions League against Arsenal. It was a lesson in efficiency for the Belgian Pro League side, as a brace from Noni Madueka and a fine strike from Garbiel Martinelli gave the Premier League side a 3-0 win. Club did manage 18 shots, with seven on target, but failed to convert any of them. They are now three points adrift of qualification for the next stage with games against Kairat Almaty and Marseille to come. The Belgian side will likely need to win both to stand a strong chance of getting into the next round.
Genk suffer second Europa League defeat
Genk are the only Belgian Pro League side still in control of their chances of making it to the next round of a European competition. However, the side suffered their second defeat in the Europa League against Danish side FC Midtjylland. The Danes have won five of their six games and earned a 1-0 win thanks to a first half goal from Gue-Sung Cho. Genk face Utrecht and Malmo in their final two games and should be able to qualify for the knock-out stages of the Europa League.
