Ousmane Dembélé has been crowned the best footballer on the planet by France Football, with the Paris Saint-Germain forward lifting the Ballon d’Or at Monday night’s glittering ceremony.
The Frenchman received the award from none other than Ronaldinho Gaúcho, who himself won the famous golden ball back in 2005. Dembélé pipped Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal to top spot, the teenager settling for second.
It’s been quite the turnaround for Dembélé. Last season began with him out of favour under Luis Enrique, benched for disciplinary issues. But through graft, attitude and sheer quality on the pitch, he forced his way back into the side. In Enrique’s fluid system, he thrived as a roaming striker, often popping up as a false nine and proving almost impossible to pin down.
The numbers tell their own story: 35 goals and 14 assists across the campaign ´- 49 direct goal contributions - a staggering return considering he’d managed just six goals the season before.
The best Premier League player was Liverpool's Mo Salah, in fourth.
