Deniz Gül scored twice at Estadio José Gomes where Porto beat Estrela da Amadora 2-1 to get another step closer to the Liga Portugal title.

The hosts began with plenty of aggression, but it was Porto who threatened to score and took an early lead from the penalty spot.

Oskar Pietuszewski went past Stefan Lekovic and Max Scholze before being brought down by Kevin Höög Jansson. Deniz Gül took responsibility and sent the ball straight down the middle.

The Turkish striker scored again in the 37th minute, getting onto the end of Alberto Costa’ cross at the back post and heading past David Grilo.

Amadora got into the contest on the hour mark, Abraham Marcus getting away from Jakub Kiwior and shaving the outside of the post. Ianis Stoica then hit the post to provide Marcus with a glorious opportunity, the Nigerian hitting the same post when it looked easier to score.

William Gomes hit the bar at the other end before Rodrigo Mora came off the bench and fired over the bar.

Marcus wasn’t done however and demanded the spotlight. He latched onto Bruno Langa’s deep cross, once again appearing certain to score but unable to connect cleanly and denied by Diogo Costa.

Amadora wouldn’t go away and got a goal back in the 79th minute. Langa won a free kick that Sydney van Hooijdonk whipped into the box, Jovane Cabral producing a deft header to steer the ball past Costa.

There would be one last chance for a dramatic equaliser, Van Hooijdonk heading Langa’s cross straight at Costa.

With three matches to play, the victory takes Porto seven points above Benfica and 11 clear of Sporting CP who have two games in hand.
