Christian Eriksen received an encouraging update after collapsing in minute 66 of Denmark’s friendly with Ukraine. The Danish FA said in a statement on Monday morning that team doctor Morten Boesen had spoken to him and that the expectation is he will be discharged soon and return home.

He grabbed his chest and fell to the turf, prompting immediate treatment. He left the pitch unaided and was taken to hospital. The match was abandoned.

Eriksen is with his family and in good spirits. The medical team are looking after players and staff and keeping in regular contact.

The internal defibrillator appeared to activate as he clutched his chest before collapsing. He was briefly unconscious, then regained consciousness quickly and was responsive. The device is being analysed because it may help determine the underlying cause.

Concern was heightened by his history. He suffered a cardiac arrest in the Denmark v Finland Euro 2020 match in June 2021, received CPR and a defibrillator on the pitch, then had an automatic device implanted and returned to professional football months later.
