Dennis Cirkin has undergone surgery on a long-term wrist problem and shared hospital photos. He was on the bench against Chelsea as Sunderland sealed European football for the first time since 1973-74 with a final-day win at the Stadium of Light.

The player said in a post: "Metal out, on the mend #wristtape4life." His update included an image from a hospital bed with his arm in a sling and another that appeared to show metalwork removed during the procedure.

The wrist issue has stretched back to last season in the Championship, when Cirkin regularly wore protection.

The 24-year-old endured another injury-disrupted campaign, making just eight Premier League appearances. Sunderland finished seventh to reach the Europa League.

Cirkin remains a favourite with fans after helping the club rise from League One to the Premier League. He joined from Tottenham Hotspur in 2021 and won promotion under Alex Neil.

His future is uncertain this summer, with his contract situation one to monitor as Sunderland prepare for another major campaign.
