Dennis Schmitt will take charge of Monaco’s Elite group, with Sofyane Cherfa named as his assistant. The German previously coached Eintracht Frankfurt’s reserves.
L'Équipe reports that the 33-year-old will replace Djimi Traoré, who has not been retained, and is due for the group’s return in the week of six July. Monaco will also formalise the appointment of Filipe Luis as first-team head coach in early July.
Cherfa, 41, came through at Monaco and played more than 300 senior matches for Louhans-Cuiseaux, Reims, Sedan and Châteauroux. Last season he led Paphos in the Youth League, losing 0-3 in Cyprus to Monaco in late November.
Schmitt moved early into coaching, working at Saint-Trond and with Paderborn’s reserves. Between January and February last season he served as interim for four Bundesliga matches with Frankfurt, all ending in defeat.
His remit is to narrow the gap between the Elite group and the first team, notably through a more aggressive and more athletic style of play.
