Yet despite winning so convincingly, the mood at Pride Park has turned sharply now that the club know exactly what's happened to Patrick Agyemang.

The 25-year-old forward was stretchered off in the 41st minute after landing awkwardly following an attempt to hold the ball up.

The Rams have now confirmed the worst possible outcome.

Derby County confirm the extent of Patrick Agyemang's injury

In an official statement released by Derby, the club confirmed that Agyemang suffered what was described as a “serious” Achilles tendon injury against Stoke.

The United States international is said to be having another assessment of his injury later on Tuesday, with no timeline of a potential recovery being disclosed in the aforementioned statement.

However, the timing could not be worse for the former Charlotte FC man, who had only just returned from international duty - where he scored against Belgium and played a half against Portugal.

Derby have now clarified that Agyemang will miss the tournament entirely.

It’s a crushing development for the player personally and a huge setback for John Eustace's wider plans heading into the business end of the season.

Derby County declare they will give Patrick Agyemang the 'highest level' of recovery

After featuring from the bench against Coventry on Good Friday, the Stoke game was Agyemang’s first start back at club level.

The East Midlands outfit mention in the statement that they will give Agyemang the "highest level of medical care and rehabilitation throughout his recovery."

Aside from being a huge miss on the pitch for Derby, the confirmation of injury will also be disappointing for the likes of Crystal Palace and Leeds United. Both Premier League teams were reported by Football Insider to be locked in a £20m race to sign Agyemang this summer window.

Yes, it's not the first thought on everyone's mind, but any potential transfer discussions are probably going to be put on hold.

Derby fans will take some reassurance from the club’s commitment to his recovery and long-term support, though the bigger picture remains sobering. Especially since the majority of supporters would've expected to see him sold in the summer to play at the highest-level.

Agyemang’s injury means missing not just the World Cup stage but crucial months of potential progression at both domestic and international level. In 37 league games, he contributed to 13 goals, and offered something very special in attack for the Rams.

It’s a cruel twist for a player who had seemed primed for a breakthrough summer. The likes of Lewis Travis and Dion Sanderson have already offered vocal support on social media for his recovery, and the whole of Derby will be behind him as well.
