Leeds United could face former loanee Joe Rothwell in the FA Cup next month, depending on whether a January move to Derby County happens in time.
Alan Nixon reports that Derby are looking to do a deal for the creative midfielder and that the finances would fit John Eustace’s budget.
Rothwell impressed on loan at Elland Road last season after joining from Bournemouth. He stepped in during injuries to Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev following the sale of Glen Kamara, with set pieces, driving runs and notable Sunderland assists standing out.
Leeds chose not to sign him. He started brightly at Ibrox, including a notable outing against Panathinaikos, but his minutes have since dipped with Nico Raskin often preferred.
Derby are 16th, seven points off the play-offs, so the league is likely to take priority. Even so, an early deal could see Eustace use him in the FA Cup before the Championship. Leeds go to Derby on 11 January, so a quick transfer could put Rothwell in opposition.
