Didier Deschamps, often branded conservative, has continued to refresh the squad, springing a final surprise when he named Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser in his 26-man World Cup squad. Risser's call-up came as he confirmed his final list.

According to Le Progres, Risser became the 125th player Deschamps has called up across 14 years in charge, an average of nine newcomers per season. Those around the manager regard this turnover as one of his major successes.

For much of his reign he leaned on a settled core, including Lloris, Mandanda, Varane, Matuidi, Pogba, Griezmann and Giroud.

Around them he has regularly injected fresh blood, a process he likes to describe as re-oxygenating the squad between major tournaments.

The scale of this summer’s overhaul is clear, 13 of the 26 are at their first World Cup. Of those, nine did not feature at Euro 2024.
