An interesting tussle is emerging between Como and Real Madrid over the future of Nico Paz, who as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport is also being eyed by Inter.

Ever since he moved to the Giuseppe Sinigaglia from Madrid (two summer ago for €6 million), it has been widely considered that his return back to Spain is a matter of when, not if.

Now, having seen him impress for tow season, Real Madrid have the chance to buy him back at €10 million, after which they’re expected to move him on for a big profit, with a fee in the region of €60 million being mooted. But there’s a deadline on that price tag — June 30. After that, they’ll have to wait till next summer for another shot at a cut-price buyback (€11 million).

Como, meanwhile, are willing to offer them €40 million to keep Paz and eliminate all buyback clauses from his contract. While this is lower than what Los Blancos are expected to sell him on for, this would fetch them immediate profit while also guaranteeing a sense of continuity for the young Argentine.

On the other hand, if they were to simply opt out of buying him back right now and wait another season, they could stand to make even more money if Paz were to impress furthermore in a season that could see Como make a push for a better Serie A finish while also playing in the Champions League.

Elsewhere, Inter are monitoring the situation with keen interest and may make a move themselves. Having been burned recently by the eleventh-hour collapse of a deal for Marco Palestra, who looked set for a move to San Siro before agreeing terms with Chelsea, the Nerazzurri will be keen to make a statement signing, and who better to help them do that than one of Serie A’s brightest young stars?

A stay at Como helps all

Real Madrid may be on a deadline, but looking at the bigger picture, they need not rush over bringing back Nico Paz right now, especially given the kind of season that awaits him and Como.

Not to mention the fact that Paz is with the Argentina national team at the World Cup; another deep run into the tournament for the Albiceleste would boost everyone’s value, which also explains in part why Como are willing to offer Real Madrid a bigger amount right now. A successful World Cup, followed by a promising outing in Serie A and the Champions League in 2026/27, would put Real Madrid in a much better position, and they could stand to make more profit after buying him back next summer for €11 million than doing so for €10 million right now.

That said, anything can happen in the future, so taking the deal that is available right now and not wait for what may be available in the future is always a appealing prospect.

In all of this, Inter’s best bet is hoping Real Madrid bring him back before next weekend and then make an improved offer of their own, though they will always be reluctant to make an unreasonable bid, regardless of how big a player is and however much hard done by they must be feeling right now after losing Marco Palestra.

For Paz, it is bound to come down to whether he plays at Como for another year or moves to another club from Real Madrid. Staying there is not an option; under José Mourinho the Bernabéu project will not be one offering budding stars a chance to hone their skills at the biggest stage.
