In recent hours, there has been considerable discussion surrounding Lamine Yamal’s withdrawal from the Spanish national team ahead of their upcoming World Cup qualifying fixtures.

The decision has sparked tension between Barcelona and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), as the club continues to carefully manage the teenager’s ongoing pubic discomfort.

Barcelona have been taking steps to ensure the effects of pubalgia on the young winger are minimised.

As part of this process, Yamal recently underwent a radiofrequency procedure, a move that left the RFEF displeased, particularly because it meant the player would be unavailable for Spain’s crucial qualifiers against Georgia and Turkey.

What is this procedure?

The Federation has released a statement explaining the specifics of the intervention.

According to their note, “Lamine underwent an invasive radiofrequency procedure” aimed at easing the discomfort in his pubic area.

This form of treatment involves applying carefully controlled electricity through specialised needles, guided by X-ray or ultrasound imaging, to precisely target the affected nerves responsible for pain.

According to Mundo Deportivo, there are two primary types of this therapy.

The first one is the conventional radiofrequency, which uses heat to reduce nerve pain signals, and the pulsed radiofrequency, which helps modulate pain sensation without causing damage to the nerves themselves.

The method uses a generator connected to electrode needles that emit a low-energy, high-frequency current to provide relief.

Importantly, this is considered a non-invasive outpatient treatment, meaning Yamal did not require hospitalisation.

He was treated by a Belgian specialist, who, alongside Dr. Pruna, Barcelona’s head team physician, carried out the procedure at the club’s facilities.

The results of such treatments are typically positive, often bringing significant pain relief and reducing the dependency on painkillers.

However, Yamal’s full recovery will still depend on following a strict physiotherapy and physical training programme prescribed by Barcelona’s medical staff.

The club remains optimistic that, by adhering to this plan, Yamal can continue his development without risking further setbacks.
