Diego Gomez left the pitch in tears with an apparent left leg injury at Tottenham, 55 days before Paraguay’s World Cup opener against the USMNT.
According to NY Times, the 23-year-old was withdrawn in the 21st minute at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after awkwardly landing from an aerial duel with Destiny Udogie in the 18th minute. His left knee seemed to buckle and, after treatment, he walked off to be replaced by Kaoru Mitoma.
Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler could not confirm the extent afterwards, saying, “I can’t say anything yet. We need to wait.”
Gomez has featured 34 times in all competitions this season, scoring 10 goals and supplying one assist, operating across midfield and further forward. He joined from Inter Miami in January 2025 and has become a first-team regular.
Capped 23 times since his 2022 debut, he started March friendlies against Greece and Morocco, scoring against Greece. Paraguay open their 2026 World Cup campaign against the USMNT at SoFi Stadium on June 12, then face Australia and Türkiye, and are the lowest ranked team in Group D. The match finished 2-2 after Brighton forward Georginio Rutter’s late equaliser.
