Fernando Diniz has set the longest unbeaten run in Copa Libertadores history for a manager of a Brazilian club, sealed by Corinthians’ 1-1 draw at Independiente Santa Fe in Bogotá in the group stage.
According to Superscore Brasil, the sequence now stands at 18 matches without defeat, spanning 2023 to 2026, with 14 games at Fluminense and four already with Corinthians.
Diniz’s last loss in the competition came in June 2023, when Fluminense were beaten 2-0 by River Plate at the Estadio Monumental de Núñez in the group phase. The Rio side then went eight matches unbeaten and went on to lift the Libertadores against Boca Juniors at the Maracanã.
Until now, the longest streak for a manager of a Brazilian club belonged to Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira, who put together 17 games without defeat between 2023 and 2024. Between 2021 and 2022 Palmeiras recorded 18 unbeaten games, but Ferreira missed the matches against Deportivo Táchira and Independiente Petrolero, so his personal count for that span is 16.
Diniz could extend the mark in this year’s competition. Corinthians still have at least two group fixtures, away to Peñarol in Uruguay and at home to Platense in São Paulo, and are very close to reaching the last 16, which would mean at least two further knockout ties.
