Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva, 26, lost their lives in a car accident in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The father of three married his long-term partner less than two weeks before the accident.

The Portuguese had played a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League title-winning campaign last season, racking up nine goal contributions.

A global outpouring of tributes followed the news of his passing, and brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher have become the latest to add their voices to the chorus as they played the first night of their global reunion tour in Cardiff.

After performing their hit song ‘Live Forever’, projectors displayed a towering image of Jota in a Liverpool shirt on the Principality Stadium stage.

Fans raised their drinks in response, with one pictured brandishing a Portugal flag.

Opening act Cast also paid tribute to Jota earlier in the evening, dedicating their song ‘Walkway’ to his memory.

Former Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson was seen paying his respects at a memorial set up outside Anfield Stadium today, while Liverpool have postponed their preseason training camp.

Star winger Mohamed Salah, who played alongside Jota for several years, wrote: “I am truly lost for words. Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break. Team mates come and go but not like this. It’s going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won’t be there when we go back.

"My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children. Those close to Diogo and his brother Andre need all the support they can get. They will never be forgotten."

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot added that the “sense of shock is absolute... He was a loved one to all of us.”
