Manchester City need to find another striker to provide support and cover for Erling Haaland. A look at City’s current squad shows this is almost a pressing need. After selling Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid last summer Pep Guardiola’s side entered this season with only one recognised striker. Finding another striker who can provide support for Haaland is no easy feat. With that in mind does a loan move for Brighton striker Evan Ferguson make sense for the Premier League champions?
Where it is hard to find a striker for Manchester City is what player would be willing to take up a role as Erling Haaland’s understudy? Almost no player in their prime would take that job. City may have to find either a player who can play in multiple roles or a young player who is eager for an opportunity to impress. However, those opportunities would be limited to playing behind the best striker in world football. A player like Brighton striker Evan Ferguson may be the perfect candidate for that role.
So far this season Ferguson has been mainly used as a substitute by Brighton. The Republic of Ireland international has slipped down the pecking order at the Seagulls. But his talent and potential are clear to see. He made a blistering start to his career at Brighton before injury struck. In 59 Premier League appearances, he has scored 17 goals. That is impressive for a 20-year-old. But where he’d represent value for Manchester City is if they did sign him on loan it would almost be a free swing.
If he impressed on loan at City he may earn himself a move to the Premier League champions. If he didn’t he’d return to Brighton. But while City had him on loan they could assess Ferguson while having a player capable of providing Haaland the opportunity to rest that he needs. It’s almost a win-win for a loan deal.
A report from GIVEMESPORT has suggested Manchester City may consider a loan move for Evan Ferguson next month. There is a case for such a move. It now remains to be seen if it one that City will pursue during the January transfer window.
