FLW's Wrexham fan pundit has given his verdict on Ollie Palmer's future with the club.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Ollie Palmer has claimed he is ready to fight for his place in the Wrexham side in the Championship next season.
In an interview with CBS Sports, the forward opened up on his future with the Red Dragons ahead of their campaign in the second division.
There has been speculation over his future, which was further fueled by his father Andy making a public comment against the club’s popular owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
However, he is hoping to fight for his place in Phil Parkinson’s side next season, despite struggling for game time in the second half of their League One promotion push.
When asked whether this is the right move for the 33-year-old, FLW’s Wrexham fan pundit Liam Grice claimed it makes sense from a personal perspective.
However, he believes it is not the best move for him professionally, indicating that the forward will struggle for game time in the second tier.
“I get from his perspective totally that he wants to stay at Wrexham,” Grice told Football League World.
“He’s got a clothing brand associated with the club, and all the press that comes with that, with advertising from Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and all the attention that brings.
“And he’s on a pretty good wage for not having to play much football. Like I said, from a personal perspective, I do get him wanting to stay.
“From a professional footballing perspective, I’m not sure it’s the best thing for his career.
“He could have a move down south nearer his family, so he’s not away from them all the time, which we know has been an issue for him since playing for Wrexham.
“Get playing regular minutes again, scoring goals and enjoying his football, which I don’t think he’s going to get the opportunity to do at Wrexham in the Championship.
“So, from a personal perspective, I get it, but from a footballing perspective, it doesn’t really make much sense to me.”
Wrexham have invested in experienced players to get from the National League to the Championship in such a short span of time.
This has included paying competitive salaries to players that are hitting the tail end of their careers.
So it’s no surprise people like Palmer want to stay on, as it’s unlikely he’d get interest from another Championship club, and he’d struggle to get paid the same level from someone else in League One.
