When Hansi Flick has been asked ahead of facing Newcastle United about the Barcelona defence and the number of goals they conceded in last season’s Champions League, especially away from home.
The Barcelona manager declaring that he; “Doesn’t think about it too much.”
I wonder what Hansi Flick will be thinking about after tonight’s game at St James’ Park?
Interesting to look at what exactly happened, when it came to Barcelona and Champions League goals last season.
Altogether, Barcelona ended up playing 14 Champions League games across the 2024/25 campaign.
The seven at home saw Barcelona concede only four goals in their first six Champions League games at home, the four league matches and then last 16 and quarter-finals. They then conceded three at home to Inter Milan at home in the semi-final first leg, making it seven in total conceded at home in seven CL matches.
Away form home in the Champions League last season (2024/25), these were the seven Barcelona results:
Monaco 2 Barcelona 1
Red Star Belgrade 2 Barcelona 5
Borussia Dortmund 2 Barcelona 3
Benfica 4 Barcelona 5
Benfica 0 Barcelona 1 (round of 16)
Borussia Dortmund 3 Barcelona 1 (quarter-final)
Inter Milan 4 Barcelona 3 (semi-final)
Altogether, Barcelona conceding 17 Champions League goals in seven away matches last season. If you take out the Benfica last 16 game, Barcelona conceded at least two in all of the other six aways and averaged almost three conceded per match.
Barcelona massively reliant last season on scoring goals in the Champions League, they needed to when conceding so many.
Talking of scoring (and creating) goals…
Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal scored 14 goals and got 16 assists in La Liga and Champions League last season 30 direct goal involvements across those 44 starts (and four sub appearances) in 2024/25.
A truly world class player, easily the biggest Barcelona threat, but injured tonight.
Barcelona are up against a Newcastle United defence that have kept three clean sheets in four Premier League matches this season and indeed, have only conceded one goal so far when NUFC have had ten men on the pitch.
