Leeds United’s medical operation has come into focus, with Daniel Farke branding it Champions League level and Dominic Calvert-Lewin staying fit while scoring 10 times.
As reported by yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, managing director Robbie Evans defended the summer gamble on Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha by pointing to a staff that kept Manor Solomon, Junior Firpo and Sam Byram on the pitch last season. Nmecha has missed some matches but has generally been available.
This season, Calvert-Lewin missed the 2-2 draw at Chelsea through illness but otherwise featured in every Premier League game between that and Newcastle at home in August, scoring 10. He has not missed a game through injury. Tim Sherwood said the striker appears to have overcome his biggest issue, staying fit, while scoring for a Leeds side he described as average.
Farke has stressed that a newly promoted team must push physical output. He says Leeds rank in the top two for distance covered, number of sprints and high sprint distance, and credits head of medicine Henry McStay and his department as Champions League level. Despite issues elsewhere, Farke has rarely approached a fixture short in any area.
Calvert-Lewin returned from illness off the bench at Birmingham City on Sunday and converted his spot-kick in a 4-2 shootout after a 1-1 draw. Leeds now have a week to prepare for Aston Villa on Saturday, with only one midweek game next month at home to Sunderland, and another likely due to FA Cup progress.
