After the Champions League semi-final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, FC Bayern’s style of play is the subject of intense debate. Vincent Kompany in particular is coming under increasing criticism for his team’s attacking approach. However, the Bayern coach makes it clear that there will be no change of course
Six goals conceded against PSG in two semi-finals, plus a conspicuous number of goals conceded in the Bundesliga against teams such as Mainz and Heidenheim – FC Bayern’s defensive stability is currently the subject of intense debate
Many experts believe that Munich are too offensive-minded under Vincent Kompany and that their bold style of play has proven to be extremely risky, especially against top teams such as Paris Saint-Germain
Kompany himself, however, sees things completely differently. At the final press conference before the Bundesliga match against VfL Wolfsburg, the Belgian clearly defended his philosophy. „I come from Belgium, it’s similar to the Germans: we are very pragmatic. We don’t have a dreamy philosophy,“ explained the Bayern coach
Above all, Kompany sees his team’s impressive attacking figures as clear proof that the path they have taken is fundamentally the right one. „If the goal difference is +81, if you have the record in the Bundesliga, then you have done a lot that you can’t lose,“ emphasized the 40-year-old
He made it clear that he was in no way prepared to give up his own identity: „We don’t want to lose what makes us strong – and we want to win.“

For Kompany, it was the little things that made the difference between progressing and elimination against PSG. „A game like PSG is played in the finest details,“ explained the Bayern coach. At the same time, he admitted that his team needed to defend better in certain situations. „Of course we have to do some things much better.“
Nevertheless, the Belgian sees no reason for a fundamental tactical reorientation: „What we want to improve must not cost us what makes us strong.“
Kompany was particularly clear when he was asked about possible tactical adjustments. „I don’t like to go left first, then right – and then do a U-turn. That’s not how I work,“ he made clear
Instead, the record champions want to work specifically on details without losing their own DNA. „We are always making improvements and I will do everything I can to ensure that we are a little better again next season.“
Kompany also pointed out that soccer matches at the absolute top level are often decided by many small factors. „The game is decided by so many little things. You have to analyze them – but you can’t go in all directions, that doesn’t lead to any solutions,“ explained the Bayern coach
Despite the bitter semi-final exit, there is still great conviction internally at FC Bayern that Kompany’s style of play will enable them to win the Champions League again in the long term.
