With Jürgen Klopp’s appointment as Germany coach nearing completion, the 59-year-old has reportedly started putting together his coaching staff.
In addition to his long-time assistants Peter Krawietz and Pepijn Lijnders, there is set to be a surprise addition, with Bild reporting that former Borussia Dortmund and Germany player Sven Bender will also take up a role.
The 37-year-old left his position as head coach of fourth-tier club SpVgg Unterhaching at the beginning of the month.
Klopp and Bender know each other well from their time together at Borussia Dortmund. Under Klopp, Bender was part of the team that won the Bundesliga title in 2011 and the domestic double a year later.
Before taking the job at Unterhaching, Bender worked as an assistant coach under both Edin Terzić and Nuri Şahin at Borussia Dortmund.
Klopp is expected to be officially appointed as Germany’s new head coach later this week.
