Durham Women have warned they could shut down within three weeks without fresh investment, issuing an urgent appeal for backing.
The club said in a statement that it is seeking investment or a complete sale after prolonged talks with potential backers fell away in recent weeks. It warned that without new funds it cannot operate in a fully compliant way in the Barclays Women’s Super League two in 2026/27. Staff and players have been told the club will cease operations at all levels unless a buyer or investor emerges within 21 days.
Durham finished 10th of 12 last season in the second tier of women’s football in England, where they compete alongside Sunderland Women and Newcastle United.
Founded in 2007 as a single under-10 girls grassroots side, the club has grown without the backing of a men’s professional team. The majority shareholders can no longer keep pace with the game’s development and want to pass stewardship to a party able to build on the legacy and realise future opportunities.
Nicknamed the Wildcats, Durham have twice reached the Women’s FA Cup quarter-finals and the League Cup last eight on two occasions. Neil Redfearn led the side for the final six games of last season.
