The young Dutch goalkeeper, Femke Liefting has joined Chelsea from AZ Alkmaar, signing a three and a half year deal with the Blues. The rising star will wear the No. 28 shirt for Sonia Bompastor’s side.

Femke Liefting began her career playing youth football with FC Uitgeest. The 20 year old then made her official professional debut with VV Alkmaar in 2021 before making her debut for AZ Alkmaar in 2023 after they replaced VV in the Eredivisie.

“I’m really honoured to be here.”

Upon signing her contract, Liefting said “It is really amazing. I am so proud. It is such a big club. I’m really honoured to be here.”

Chelsea’s Head of Women’s Football, Paul Green added: ‘Femke is an exciting goalkeeper whom we have been tracking over the last few years. She has vast experience for a player of her age, with over 50 senior appearances in the Dutch league already. Alongside an illustrious career so far with the Dutch youth national teams. ‘We look forward to seeing her development continue in the upcoming years.”

Liefting has also impressed on the international stage for the youth levels of the Netherlands. Representing her country at the under 17s and under 19s European Championships before representing them at the under 20s World Cup in Columbia last summer.

During the tournament, the promising keeper made some big saves in decisive moments including two penalties in a penalty shootout in the quarter finals, which they went onto win over the tournament hosts. Liefting was named goalkeeper of the tournament winning the Golden Glove award, whilst her country finished fourth. This and her recent form has been rewarded with two recent calls up to the senior Dutch national team.

Chelsea are thrilled to have Femke at the club and look forward to the 20 year old developing over her time in London.
