The 2-2 draw against 1. FSV Mainz 05 may not have been a cause for jubilation at FC Bayern, but it did nothing to change their general satisfaction with their Bundesliga performance to date. Chief Sports Officer Max Eberl had clear words after the game
A draw against the team bottom of the table at home in the Allianz Arena is not what FC Bayern is looking for. The mood after the final whistle was correspondingly subdued. Nevertheless, there is no unrest at Säbener Straße. Rather, the slip-up is viewed realistically – with a view to the table and the development of the team
Max Eberl made it clear after the game that individual point losses are part and parcel of the season. The overall picture is crucial. „If someone had told me before the season that we would have a nine-point lead over our closest rivals after matchday 14, we would all have said: Fantastic!“, explained the sporting director, underlining the record champions‘ exceptional starting position
Particularly noteworthy: Despite the slip-up against Mainz, FC Bayern even extended their lead at the top of the table. RB Leipzig lost 3-1 at Union Berlin and are now ten points behind the Munich team. Borussia Dortmund, who are level on points with the Saxons, were also unable to take advantage of the slip-up and were held to a 1-1 draw at SC Freiburg
As a result, FC Bayern not only remain comfortably at the top, but have also pulled further away from the chasing pack. A fact that is providing additional serenity internally. In Munich, they know that a long season is not without setbacks – the decisive factor is consistency over the months. And that is exactly what Bayern have delivered so far
The loss of points against Mainz is therefore not being overrated. Instead, the focus remains clearly on the tasks ahead. With a comfortable lead behind them and a stable starting position, FC Bayern are confident going into the next few weeks of the Bundesliga season.
