Eddie Howe says he has yet to decide whether Sandro Tonali will face Sunderland on Sunday, with the midfielder a major doubt. According to Sunderland Echo, the Newcastle United head coach will assess the Italy international closer to kick-off.
Tonali impressed in the 1-1 first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie with Barcelona, then sustained what appeared to be a groin and hip problem in the 7-2 loss at Camp Nou in the return.
He underwent a scan after returning to the North East and the issue is not as bad as initially feared, though his availability remains uncertain.
Howe added that Lewis Miley, Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar remain out and will not be available until after the international break.
Sunderland travel to Tyneside seeking a league double, after a Nick Woltemade own goal separated the sides at the Stadium of Light in December.
Howe urged his players to use the emotions from that defeat and focus on delivering a strong performance. He said the benefits of a result could be significant for supporters and the city, and stressed preparation and recovery will be key with eight games remaining.
