According to Sunderland Echo, Eddie Howe says a decision on Sandro Tonali’s involvement in Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby will be made closer to the game, adding the injury is not as bad as first feared.
Tonali has been pivotal since a reported £55m move from AC Milan in summer 2023. He impressed in a 1-1 draw with Barcelona in the Champions League first leg last week, then suffered a groin and hip issue during the 7-2 defeat at Camp Nou.
The midfielder underwent a scan after returning to the North East. Howe has not confirmed his availability and will assess the Italian before naming his squad.
Howe confirmed Lewis Miley, Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar will not be available until after the international break.
Sunderland head to Tyneside seeking a league double after December’s Stadium of Light meeting was settled by an own goal from Newcastle’s club-record signing Nick Woltemade.
Howe urged his players to use the emotions from that defeat and focus on producing a strong display. He highlighted the importance of preparation and recovery, noting the potential positives for supporters and the city could be significant with eight massive games left.
