Eddie Howe says he is waiting to hear the full extent of Bruno Guimaraes’ hamstring injury.

The Newcastle midfielder was forced off late on in the win over Tottenham and is still undergoing assessments.

“With Bruno, we’re awaiting the full extent of the hamstring injury,” Howe said.

“Obviously at that stage of the game he was getting fatigued, maybe in a normal situation with a full bench we would maybe have taken him off before that moment but we didn’t.

“We ran out of midfielders so he stayed on the pitch and unfortunately got injured.”

But in better news for Howe and his side, fellow midfielders Lewis Miley and Joelinton are closing in on returns.

“With Lewis, we’re waiting sort of day by day,” Howe said.

“He’s got, sort of, a dead leg. He got a bad knock to, I think, his thigh.

“I think there’s a little bit of muscle damage on the knock so he’s having scans every few days to see how that is.

“We don’t think it’s going to be long term. Hopefully be back pretty quickly so let’s wait and see on that one.

“Joelinton is doing really well. I don’t think he’ll make this game (against Aston Villa) but he’s not going to be too far away beyond this game.

“He’s desperate to be back involved as he normally is. That’s a great sign for us. It means he’s feeling good about his body and he’s very positive.”

In defence, Howe says he is also expecting Tino Livramento to be back by next month.

But Emil Krafth is not close to a return.

“Tino is on track,” he said. “I think early March was the diagnosis for the return to play.

“At the moment he’s back on the grass, he’s running, he’s building his fitness back up and we’re happy with how he’s doing.”

“Emil, at the moment, is not close.”
