Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe praised his team after their impressive 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup fourth round last night.
They progressed to the quarter-finals despite their injury woes, and extended their winning streak against Spurs to four games on the spin.
The Magpies have now won six of their last seven games against Tottenham and will fancy their chances of retaining the League Cup this season.
Goals from Fabian Schar and Nick Woltemade on either side of half-time helped Newcastle win the game, and Howe couldn’t contain his delight at both the result and the performance.
“Really pleased because I think when you make the changes we did, you hope to see a performance that’s in line with our identity and our expectations,” he said (via the BBC).
“I thought the pressing early on in the game and the general attitude of the players was very good.”
Howe made eight changes from the team that beat Fulham 2-1 last weekend, but they delivered a performance cohesive enough to send Spurs packing.
He praised his side’s attitude in a win that has undoubtedly improved the morale in the dressing room even further after extending their winning streak to three games in all competitions.
“I think with the way we work, we like to think regardless of the changes we make, they deliver a Newcastle performance in line with our expectations,” he added.
“It’s most important that our attitude is right from minute one, and the will to win that you need, and we had. Individually, I thought there were some really good performances. Collectively, we were strong.”
However, their immediate priorities lie in the Premier League, with Howe’s side set to take on West Ham United at the London Stadium this weekend.
