Newcastle United have renewed their interest in signing goalkeeper James Trafford.
Eddie Howe had hoped to sign Trafford from Burnley last summer, but saw a pursuit fall through as the shot-stopper opted forManchester City.
Trafford's transfer to the Etihad has not worked out as hoped, with the subsequent signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma reducing him to second-choice status.
The England international is now keen to leave Manchester City in search of a first-choice role. The Athletic are reporting that Newcastle are set to make fresh enquiries, as the Magpies look to land a new goalkeeper.
Newcastle have signed 20-year-old Ewen Jaouen from Reims, but remain open to a second goalkeeper signing.
Aaron Ramsdale has returned to Southampton after his loan spell at St James' Park, while Nick Pope will be allowed to leave should a suitable offer arrive. Ipswich Town and Leeds United have been among the clubs linked with the 34-year-old.
Newcastle are yet to make contact with Manchester City to discuss the terms of a deal. The Cityzens paid around £30m for Trafford last summer and would expect to recoup that investment.
However, one issue is Trafford's participation at theWorld Cup. The goalkeeper wants to decide his future after the tournament, though Newcastle are keen to conduct their business early, after issues last summer.
In February, Trafford spoke publicly on his frustration at a season spent largely on the sidelines. He made 17 appearances, winning the FA Cup and League Cup, though played just four times in thePremier League.
“It (being second choice goalkeeper) wasn’t what I expected,” Trafford said.
“I tried to guard against the situation happening, but it’s the reality. I know every time I play, I’ve got to give it my best shot and try to win and try to improve. That’s the current situation I’m in.”
