Calls for Eddie Howe to consider resigning followed Newcastle United’s 7-2 defeat at Barcelona, 8-3 on aggregate, days before the Sunderland derby.

Newcastle competed well before the interval, then collapsed after the restart as defensive errors mounted. It was the club’s heaviest defeat in a European knockout tie.

Radio host Adrian Durham urged Howe to offer his resignation, while former West Ham striker Dean Ashton felt such a step would be ill timed with the derby looming.

"A tough way to go out. First half, I thought we were excellent. Quite a lot of individual errors that have ultimately cost us." He told TNT Sports.

"In the second half, we were nowhere near as good as the first. They deserved to go through."

"Yeah, I've got no problems picking myself up. Now it's all about Sunderland."

"We've got to play like our lives depend on it." Newcastle will seek a response after December’s 1-0 defeat in the reverse fixture.
