Edin Terzic, shaped at Borussia Dortmund and a staunch backer of youth, has been lined up by Jon Uriarte to take charge of Athletic after Ernesto Valverde’s exit, according to El Correo. He has been a Klopp scout, assistant to Slaven Bilic and Lucien Favre, and later Dortmund head coach.
Born in October 1982 in North Rhine-Westphalia to a Bosnian father and Croatian mother, he grew up in Menden near Dortmund. A first visit to the Westfalenstadion at nine fixed his allegiance.
At 29, a former striker forced to retire early by injuries, he was assisting Dortmund’s under-17s when a text arrived from Slaven Bilic asking him to call. He compiled a 50-plus-page opposition dossier for Croatia at Euro 2012. He then joined Bilic at Besiktas and West Ham.
Back at Dortmund, he scouted for Klopp, coached in the youth and second teams, and was Favre’s assistant for 110 matches before taking interim charge. After Marco Rose, now Bournemouth head coach replacing Andoni Iraola, was also removed, he became head coach. He won a cup, finished Bundesliga runners-up level on 71 points with Bayern, and lost a Champions League final to Real Madrid.
He is described as rigorous, empathetic and assured with the media and the dressing room, a blend of German mentality and Croatian passion. On the pitch he prioritises pressure and adapts tactically, switching between 4-3-3, 4-1-4-1 and 4-2-3-1. He holidays in Makarska with his wife Kora, a former Bochum player, and their two daughters.
