Edno on his Corinthians days and memories with Ronaldo

Last Friday, the 17th, Central do Timão published yet another exclusive interview on its YouTube channel! This time, the guest was former midfielder Edno, who played 27 times for the Alvinegro between 2009 and 2011. Live from the Central studio at HubFiel, located in the Neo Química Arena, the chat with Matheus Fernandes and Leo Rodrigues lasted almost two hours, with the former athlete sharing behind-the-scenes stories from his time at Timão.

In one of the moments of the interview, Edno recalled one of the most tense points of his time at the club: the start of the 2011 season, when Corinthians suffered a traumatic elimination in the preliminary phase of the Copa Libertadores against Tolima, from Colombia. The former player labeled the moments after the elimination as “the biggest ordeal” he ever faced as an athlete.

“I always had the habit of not leaving my car at the club’s training center. My friend would bring me and take my car back. That day I went home, and then the news came, right? Tite left his car, a bunch of players, staff. Then they trashed the training center, broke a lot of people’s cars. When we got to the training center, I don’t know where they put (the squad) to train. We were all insecure there, right? They hit the bus with bamboo sticks, broke it. The security guard said, ‘they’re going to kill us’.”

He continued, recalling the situation. “Everyone back there was scared and all. Man, it was the biggest ordeal I’ve ever been through at a club in my life. It was the biggest ordeal I’ve ever faced in my life. Everyone was hiring undercover police officers,” he said.

But there was also time to mention the good memories from his time at Parque São Jorge – among them, his experience with Ronaldo Fenômeno: “A cool guy, easygoing, playful. We would do finishing training. The finishing training was with Júlio César, Felipe, Danilo, and there was also Rafael Santos. Ronaldo would shoot from outside the box, and the goalkeepers would try hard, but the ball (always) ended up in the net. Out of 20 shots, 18 were goals and two hit the post.”

Edno went on, stating that he learned a lot from Ronaldo. “He would always come up to us, the forwards, and say that you have to be calm inside the box. ‘You have to make the goalkeeper and the defender nervous. One feint you make, if the guy touches you it’s a penalty. Same with the goalkeeper. One feint, you move to the side and score. That’s the moment you have to be cold-blooded. Get past the guy and aim for the corner of the goal,’” he said, recalling the tips he received from the Phenomenon.
