The penultimate AFCON 2025 fixture should provide great entertainment

Egypt and Nigeria will contest the Africa Cup of Nations third-place play-off this weekend.

Perhaps the most bittersweet fixture of any major tournament, a bronze medal is the reward for the winner to recognise their accomplishments over the past three weeks.

Both nations were among the favourites to win AFCON this year before a ball had been kicked, but ultimately fell short at the semi-final stage.

Egypt were beaten by Senegal in the first of the semi-final showdowns on Wednesday before Nigeria lost out to Morocco on penalties in Rabat.

The Pharaohs came into their semi-final in a defensive shape, content to sit back and absorb pressure before looking to strike on the counter. It did not quite work out that way, though, as they failed to muster a shot on target until the 95th minute and were edged out by Sadio Mane’s winner.

The hosts Morocco emerged victorious in the shootout as Youssef En-Nesyri stepped off the bench to bag the winning spot-kick after left-back Bruno Onyemaechi had missed the Super Eagles’ fourth penalty.

Hamza Igamane saw his effort saved by Stanley Nwakali before Bono restored parity, keeping out Samuel Chukwueze.

Here’s everything you need to know about the game…

Egypt vs Nigeria team news

Trezeguet shook off an injury to appear in Egypt’s semi-final defeat, though Mohamed Hamdi was not passed fit to play and it remains to be seen whether he can be involved on Saturday.

Egypt were dour against Senegal, so Hossam Hassan may well look to rotate. Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush were both poor on the day but, in fairness, struggled for service. In any case, they are unlikely to be dropped as the side’s sole Premier League representatives.

One particular Nigeria player will feel particularly hard done by the result in Rabat. Calvin Bassey put in a heroic performance at the back for the Super Eagles, but was shown a harsh yellow card in the first half which will see him suspended for this game.

Eric Chelle will have his captain Wilfred Ndidi back after the former Leicester man missed the semi-final through suspension, while striker Cyriel Dessers has missed the remainder of the tournament after suffering an ankle problem.

Victor Osimhen was hobbling in the dying embers of extra time before he was withdrawn ahead of the shootout, so Nigeria supporters will be sweating over his fitness for this game.

Egypt vs Nigeria prediction

Both sides struggled to show a potency in the final third, and that could be repeated in this game.

It could also end up being a shoot-out between the two teams’ star strikers, Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush against Osimhen.

The Pharaohs and Super Eagles will want to end their tournament on a high, so this should be a decent encounter.

Nigeria to win, 2-1.
