Liverpool silenced their critics with a five-star display against Eintracht Frankfurt, as goals from Hugo Ekitike, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, Cody Gakpo, and Dominik Szoboszlai propelled them to victory.

Despite seven successive wins at the start of the season, Arne Slot’s side have been on a difficult run of form lately. Pressure had been mounting on Liverpool’s stars after four consecutive losses, but The Reds responded brilliantly in Germany tonight.

As it happened

Initially, it looked as though Liverpool’s woes would continue once more after some sloppy play saw ex-Leeds man Rasmus Kristensen take the lead early on for the home side. It was a nervy and closely fought game following Frankfurt’s opener and the home side threatened to extend their lead through young talent Nathan Brown, but Giorgi Mamardashvili was equal to everything the German’s were throwing at him.

Slot’s worries were eased in the 35th minute, as Hugo Ekitike, who was starting alongside Alexander Isak for the first time, scored against his former club to level proceedings. The Frenchman was found by Andy Robertson and finished excellently after carrying the ball from the halfway line .

The next 10 minutes were where Liverpool took the game away from Frankfurt. Captain Virgil van Dijk and his centre-back partner Ibrahima Konaté added goals from corners to all but end any worries of a fifth consecutive defeat.

It was a strong performance but Slot opted to change things at half time. Since setting the British record transfer fee, Alexander Isak has struggled to make an impact for his new team and the Swede was substituted at half-time with what was later confirmed to be a groin injury. It hasn’t been an easy few months on Merseyside for Isak, but it was an easy second half for his team.

Florian Wirtz seemed to finally become the player everyone saw at Bayer Leverkusen as he brilliantly squared the ball to in-form Cody Gakpo, who calmly slotted home Liverpool’s fourth. The result was compounded when Dominik Szoboszlai fired home a rocket to make it a near perfect night for The Reds, who desperately needed a reprieve following such a turgid run of results.

The win boosts Liverpool into the top 10 of the Champions League table and in good stead to automatically qualify. The result will also help silence some of the noise that has been surrounding Anfield in the past few weeks, especially after their disappointing loss to Manchester United last weekend.

Arne Slot’s side will now travel to Brentford in the hope of wrestling back their poor form and once again putting pressure on Arsenal in the Premier League.
