Sport Bild reports that Eintracht Frankfurt are fearing the worst with respect to striker Jonathan Burkardt’s latest injury. Everything fell apart for the Bundesliga outfit last night after the 25-year-old began experiencing trouble with his calf and had to be substituted off shortly before the hour-match in a Champions League match against Atalanta Bergamo.
Eintracht head coach Dino Toppmöller noted in his post-match interview last night that Burkardt would be heading directly to the hospital for an MRI this morning. The German tabloid claims that the SGE medical and coaching staff are acting on the assumption that Burkardt has suffered a serious injury and will be out for some time.
Burkardt – who threatened to see his career de-railed by a serious injury that kept him out of action long term whilst playing at Mainz – signed with the club he supported as a child this past summer and was in fantastic form. Three braces in the Bundesliga this season left the Darmstadt-native with eight goals through 11 matchdays this season.
Burkardt stood second behind Harry Kane (11 goals) on the Bundesliga’s top goal-scoring charts this season. Burkardt had just come off another fabulous performance against Köln over the weekend in which he bagged another brace and earned Bundesliga team-of-the-week honors.
