Emma Hayes suffered a surprise defeat as manager of the USWNT after Portugal came from behind to win in Philadelphia.
Portugal had never beaten the USA in a women's match before but they were able to turn it around after falling behind in the first minute.
Catarina Macário provided a quite wonderful assist as she carried the ball with the visitors doing little to stop her. The Chelsea forward then dinked in a pass for Rose Lavelle to finish past Inês Pereira, the Everton goalkeeper currently on loan at Deportivo de La Coruña.
From that point on, most would have expected the Americans to go on and win the game comfortably but Portugal pulled level just before the break.
A corner floated in from the right by Kika Nazareth was headed in by Diana Gomes with Phallon Tullis-Joyce – who has been impressive for Manchester United again so far this season – unable to keep the header out.
The turnaround was completed from another corner delivery by Nazareth, this time in the 72nd minute. The ball fell kindly to Fátima Pinto who was able to find the net and record a historic win for her country.
This defeat gives former Blues boss Hayes plenty to think about, especially her side's inability to deal with set-pieces out and see out a game against a team 21 places below them in the official FIFA rankings.
