Paris mayor Emmanuel Grégoire has backed Kylian Mbappé after the France captain’s comments on the RN and the far right drew criticism. He said athletes are legitimate voices on political questions.
In an interview conducted in March and published on Tuesday, Mbappé was asked about the rise of the RN in France. “We are not disconnected from what is happening in our country. People sometimes think that because we have money, because we are famous, these kinds of problems do not affect us. But it affects me. I know what it means for my country when people like them take charge,” he told Vanity Fair.
Following those remarks, Grégoire posted on X on Friday. He said sportspeople, artists and public figures have not only the right but also the legitimacy to speak politically, offering his full support to Mbappé.
He described Mbappé as a child of Greater Paris and praised his clear stance against the RN and the far right.
Mbappé said he was speaking on behalf of the France squad in addressing the issue.
